samsung s4 turns off with 40% plus battery left

My phone is doing exactly the same! except I can plug it into charger and it comes back on. It turns off at random percentages above 40% plus I can't turn it back on until I plug it into my charger. It then displays 0% until just now when it went of and I plugged it in and it came on at 48%. It started when a upgrade request came up last week. Not sure what it was but it took around 20-30 mins to download and reboot. then I got all these issues. I've tried reading up about it. and it say that samsung had a batch of dodgy batteries. so I bought a new battery (unfortunately from eBay and the phone would even charge let alone switch on! I would really appreciate any help!

It probably wasn't a great idea to get a battery on eBay. You pay peanuts.....

In any event, take a look at this link originally posted by MI5. It might help: http://community.o2.co.uk/t5/Android-Devices-Samsung-HTC-Sony/How-To-Reset-your-Samsung-after-a-Firm...

It's possible that you have some fluff stuck in your charging port or that the charging port is damaged.
If doing the reset doesn't help, try and carefully clean out the port with an old toothbrush.

Hi I'm a dippy so and so. New battery works fine. Just didn't take the yellow tape off 🙈. So the battery is working. Before school run at 8 am it's was charged to 88%. Popped it in my pocket and came back around 850 am it had turned off wouldn't turn back on until I plugged it in. Originally the battery picture was grey and empty and the it shot 3 quarters up to green and turn on with 85%. I'm plugged into my charger writing. Does your above advice still indicate to fix this? And thank you for your quick replies.

You have to do the reset as linked to above.
If still no good after that it'll have to go back to Samsung for them to fix it.

Hi thanks for reply and advice. I've done the reset and it's still the same. How do I contact Samsung? Or do I go to O2 as phone is still under warranty?
