Sony Experian phone set up- notification issue

Hubby has his first smartphone but cannot get a sound notification nor vibration for messages. Calls are fine .  Any suggestions as to what might be wrong.

 

NB    i thought i posted this query yesterday but its not to be seen

Sony Experian     

if you can spell out where to look for the settinngs , the app etc.that would be fine

I have a different more simple facia so I cant help  C.   We are both older persons.
