I am soon going to New Zealand via the USA for 5 weeks and would like to be able to use my Mobile in particular for checking e-mails, what would be the best package I could buy?

There is nothing you can buy from o2 to reduce roaming costs.

Get the handset unlocked and get a local pay as you go sim.

Or just use free wifi when available

Roaming and using data in the US on an O2 sim will be very expensive. Your best bet is to get a PAYG sim from AT&T or T-Mobile when you're in the US. You can also purchase an international sim before you leave the UK. Look on Google for them. I'm not sure how their rates would compare to a US PAYG sim, but it's worth taking a look, as you could use it when you get to NZ as well.
